What is the Authoring Tool?

The authoring tool is a built-in application in Odijoo, which allows users to rapidly create interactive, dynamic and fully-hosted online courses. It can be accessed in the Author Course menu. There are five simple steps required to create an Odijoo course using the Authoring tool:

Step 1: Describe
– a course name and description is inputted. A course name
is mandatory and is what distinguishes one course from others in Odijoo. A course
description is not required, but recommended to give users an overview of what
the course is all about.

Step 2: Choose
– Odijoo has 12 design templates (and growing) to choose from. Choosing a course templates is a required  step.

Step 3: Create
– The course outline is the product of your instructional
. This is defined broadly as an instructional discipline which asks you to determine the needs of your learner, defining the end goal of your instruction, create materials (text - multi-media) to support your goals and measure results.

Pay careful attention to the sequence of your outline. There are many purposes to your outline sequence, for example:

  • Ask yourself if learners already have a strong background in
the content, if not, then sequence your outline from
the bottom up. Unless you teach prerequisite information first, your learners
    could become confused.
  • Alternatively, whole or part sequencing gives learners a big
picture overview, break it into component parts and then put the pieces back
    into a whole again.
  • Job sequencing delivers instruction in the same order that tasks are performed in the workplace.

This step gives users a chance to plan out their course and divide it into
modules, lessons and topics.

Step 4: Manage
– After an outline is created, it can be filled with course
content. The authoring tool allows users to:

  • Format course content: Add or change
fonts, font sizes, font colors, bullet points, justification and links.
Formatting features in the authoring tool are similar in functionality and use
    to those of Microsoft Office.
  • Add Audio or Narration: must be mp3
format and uploaded from a user’s computer. The file size limited is up to 10 MB and no limit to
the number of total audio files allowed in a course.
  • Add videos: must be flv or swf and
uploaded from a user’s computer. Each video can be maximum 10MB in size and
there is no limit to the number of total video files allowed in a course.
  • Add images: can be gif, jpg or png and
uploaded from a user’s computer. There is no limit to file size or the number
of total images allowed in a course.

Step 5: Finalize
– Once a course has been created, it can be
accessed or modified at any time in Authored
, located in the Author Course menu. Once a user is satisfied with a course, it can be published into a classroom and delivered to students for free or for an enrollment price.
Alternatively, the course can be sold to Odijoo users as a syndicated course,
where users can purchase the course, turn it into their own classroom and
teach it to their own students.
